In a healthy joint, the synovial fluid simultaneously assumes a lubricating and buffer function and thus protects against excessive abrasion and damage caused by, for example, impact. Synovial fluid has special viscoelastic properties by nature. Synvisc® (Hylan G-F 20) is modeled on natural synovial fluid and optimized for viscosupplementation in the joint by a special double cross-linking of molecules. Synvisc® has a high molecular weight and and a high viscosity. Unlike medium and low molecular weight hyaluronic acids, Synvisc® is less fluid and stays in shape longer. In the joint, this can lead to an improved gliding and buffering function and stimulate the body’s own hyaluronic acid production in the long term. The joint is protected for longer. Under certain circumstances, the time for a total joint replacement can be significantly delayed and patients can continue to live “actively” with their natural joint.
